Hospital and Healthcare Security
Focus: Workplace Violence
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has revealed a concerning 63% surge in violent injury rates against healthcare professionals from 2011 to 2018, a trend that saw a further escalation during the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as per hospital safety directors. A recent survey conducted by National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the country, showcased a startling rise in workplace violence, with 48% of over 2,000 nurses acknowledging an increase – a figure that is over double compared to the previous year. Various factors contribute to this heightened aggression against medical staff.
Among them are patients’ frustrations and confusion related to their medical conditions and care processes, grief due to the deteriorating health of hospitalized loved ones, and impatience caused by trying to secure attention amidst notable staffing shortages, particularly in nursing sectors. Additionally, conditions such as delirium and dementia, mental health challenges, as well as broader political, and social issues further fuel these aggressive behaviors.
How we can help.
To safeguard medical professionals from escalating workplace violence, a multifaceted security strategy is imperative. Firstly, enhancing physical security measures by deploying trained security personnel, installing comprehensive surveillance systems, and implementing badge access systems for restricted areas. Collaborative efforts should also be prioritized, forging strong partnerships with local law enforcement, and promoting a community of support and mutual understanding within the healthcare environment, which is adaptable and responsive to ongoing assessments and improvements.
